The Cantos Music Foundation is a non-profit music organization that celebrates the cultural importance of music through it’s historical music collection, kids programs, musical events and workshops and much more. Every year, Cantos brings 30, 000 people through it’s doors, and executive director, Andrew Mosker, focuses on making those numbers grow.
Cantos has recently won the bid to make Calgary’s historical blues bar, The King Eddy, it’s future home. The Eddy was condemned by the City of Calgary in August of 2004, shutting the doors in the faces of heartbroken blues lovers. Many thought their favorite blues bar would be shut down forever – but Cantos hopes to bring this back to life in 2012 by incorporating the original blues room into it’s home, along with a recording studio, museum and mentorship programs, among other things.
The project is the first major undertaking in Calgary’s plan to rebuild the East Village – and it’s no small endeavor, indeed. Join me as I follow Cantos’ long and winding road to reopening the doors of The King Eddy and putting Calgary’s music community on the map.
